The Adom boys finished planting the basil in our school garden today. Last week Maria had made rain barrels out of old juice containers. We have been watching to see if they are collecting rain. Today there was enough rain water collected in them to water the newly planted basil! We love this lesson in Tikkun Olam as we learn about water conservation. Thank you Maria!

Tikkun Olam
The Adom boys had discussed our Tikkun Olam project last week and we decided to do some planting and cleaning to help the earth Today we planted mint in the large planter by the entrance. We weeded and prepared the soil, examined the root systems, and carefully planted our mint. We look forward to planting other herbs as well, as the mint received mixed reviews upon smelling and tasting! Everyone enjoyed the planting process!

Spring Gardening
The warm weather has given us the opportunity to start gardening outside. One of the big goals was to weed the soil to prepare for planting. One weed in particular took a lot of hard work. After working together, we were finally able to dig up the deep rooted weed. In the last picture, Drew, Molly, and Jack show off the fruits of their labor by displaying the monster root that was unearthed.

What's Growing in Kohavim?

The seeds the children planted in our classroom planter have sprouted! Pea shoots are growing tall and decorative corn stalks are not far behind. Every day the plants get a little bit taller, and the Kohavim botanists are ready to observe and care for the plants. They have been watering the planter each morning. They are also using rulers and yard sticks to measure the height of the plants. When you have some time, come by and see what's growing in our indoor planter!

Parsley Planting
We got our hands dirty this week in the Kohavim class as everyone planted parsley seeds. Each child used a trowel to fill their individual planter with soil. They sprinkled parsley seeds on top and then pressed the seeds down into the soil. We gave our plants water to moisten the soil and placed them in the windowsill. We also made predictions about how long it will take for the seeds to grow. The children's predictions ranged from 7 days to 30 days. We can't wait four our seeds to begin sprouting! Hopefully, our parsley plants will be fully grown just in time for families to use at their Passover seders.

How does your garden grow?
Jacob and Eli helped secure the fence around the flowers and vegetables that the children planted with Maria. With the sun finally shining today, we are optimistic that they will grow and that we will harvest our bounty later in the summer.
