The Excavation

What do you get when you combine blocks of ice, hammers, and a group of young children? An ice smash, of course! The children were greeted with blocks of ice with insects frozen inside and were invited to use hammers to get the insects out. I expected them to quickly move on to using their feet to stomp on the ice, or to try smashing them on the concrete. Instead the children were content to hammer away, chipping the ice off the larger blocks, which took a tremendous amount of focus and determination as you can see from Rylan's expression. As we reached the end of the exacation session Josh finally thought of a new way to get inside. We could throw the blocks on the ground! So the real smashing began. What a blast. This is an easy one to try at home. All you need is a few plastic containers, a plastic toy, and some water.

  1. Hmmmm, that does sound like fun!! I wonder how long before the kids figure out that they could melt the ice cubes as another method! Probably not as much fun as smashing! :)
