The challenge of the day: to hammer golf tees into huge blocks of styrofoam. Young children have often not yet developed a hand dominance and will instead use either hand or switch hands often during play and fine motor activities. By the time children are about five, they usually begin to exclusively choose one hand for challenging fine motor tasks. Young children need many opportunities that encourage the use of one or the other hand, as well as both hands together. Rachel and Eli are both demonstrating their skill in the two handed approach, stabilizing the foam with one hand and holding the hammer with the other. It looks similar to the two handed technique they will later use to stabilize their paper when learning to write.
