Diary of the Worm~ as dictated by the Kohavim class

The Kohavim boys and girls have been very curious about worms As they observed the worm with Sasha, they noticed that it was BIG and moving in one direction. Sasha asked, which part they thought was the 'head'? Mia pointed to the part she thought was the head. When asked why she thought that, she responded that it was moving ---------->>>>> so that MUST be the head. ( The power of observation and logic~)

And then they had to NAME the worm. Some thought it was a "mommy worm", and others thought it was a "daddy", because it was BIG, and daddy's are BIG." Now that the worm was given an identity, the next question was do worms have brains???

What do YOU think?? What do worms do? Matt responded that worms make soil for our veggies." while Mia responded that "it sucks the soil to make flowers."

Having, by now, developed a love for this worm, they asked if they could bring it inside. With some hesitation, because I am not a worm enthusiast, it was agreed, this "daddy" worm could come inside. But what did the worm need inside?

Oliver thought we needed to put it in dirt so it could live, and Mia said: Let's get dirt and leaves because that is where it's naturally alive."

So off they went in search of a habitat for this BIG DADDY Worm. We are looking forward to more inquiries and adventure of this daddy/mommy worm.

Havdalah Helper

Monday morning Havdalah is our way to say good-bye to Shabbat and hello to the new week. All of the children meet in the community room to welcome the new week. Ellen leads the ceremony with songs. Several children assist her by holding the braided candle, the wine and the spice cup. Micah is holding the wine cup up high for the blessing. Being an Havdalah Helper is an special honor and point of pride for the children. We end the ceremony with the songs Shavuah Tov, Eliahu and Shalom Haverim.

A Seasonal Snack

What's golden and crunchy and shaped like a shofar? Bugles, of course! The Levana class enjoyed them with hummus today, and it was a two-thumbs-up experience. The children learn so much from eating together; many are trying new foods for the first time. We wash hands and prepare the table, sit and say HaMotzi together, share snacks and drinks, chat, and clean up. Refueled and refreshed, we are ready to hit the playground!

Painting the Earth

Rosh Hashana is the birthday of the world and we painted our earth today.
Julia, in the Levana class, used sponges to paint her earth - green for land and blue for the ocean. Sometimes she used the sponge clipped to a clothes pin handle and at other times she held the sponge directly. Children love to experience a variety of styles and techniques. I demonstrated a tap, tap, tap method. Here she is using a spreading style, strengthening her fine motor skills and sense of color and creativity.

Hungry Hungry Sunshines!

As we lined up to go outside, Jaedyn exclaimed "I didn't have any bananas!" A few others piped in saying that they also wanted more banana. It was almost time to go home, but it was obvious that many Sunshine children need an extra refueling before heading outside. Judi grabbed a banana and handed a piece of banana to anyone who wanted. They were gobbled right up!! It was a bit different than our usual snack time, but fun to do - just the same!!
