What is the hardest word to say?

We had another visit from Ellen and her friend the Ziz.  Together, they told the class a story about the Ziz's quest to find the hardest word to say.  The children enjoyed "flying" around with Ziz, over mountains and trees to find the word--the word "SORRY".  Ziz ended his part of the visit by giving the kids little kisses in their hands.  Everyone then had the opportunity to touch and smell the etrog and shake the lulav.

Blintzes for Shavuot

It is Jewish tradition to enjoy delicious dairy food to celebrate Shavuot.   The children love to cook with their teachers, and learn so much by preparing their own food.  Not only do they learn that combining ingredients will make a delicious meal, they also learn to follow step-by-step directions; they learn about measurement and how to mix without splashing everything out of the bowl; they learn how to use different cooking tools; and they learn wait patiently while our delicious snack is in the oven.

The first step in making blintzes is to make sure you read the recipe and check to make sure you have all the ingredients and tools that you need.

  First, Samantha created her own picture recipe, with each instruction represented in a drawing.

Then, Harold checked to make sure we had all the ingredients and tools we needed.

Ellen began the cooking process by smearing the melty butter on the bottom of the baking dish.

Hayley helped to line up the blintzes in rows in the pan.

Harold added eggs to the bowl.

Samantha measured sugar to add to the mix.

And we all took turns beating the eggs.

When the batter was ready, we watched the teacher pour the beautiful batter over the blintzes.

When we sat down to eat it, it was very hot!  So Samantha blew on her bowl to cool off her blintzes.

Everyone sampled the delicious blintz soufflé, with a glass of orange juice!

Then, we SHARED!  We brought Ellen a sampling of our delicious soufflé!  And guess what?  She liked it!

Want to Create a Project??

Ellen came into the Haifa classroom yesterday stocked with armloads of white felt and blue paint. She asked our students if they wanted to try a project that she had never done before. Of course they jumped at the chance!! Each child got a giant piece of white felt, and painted what they wanted on their own piece. We are adding different colors each day, and at the end of the project, we are going to blow dry the felt with hair dryers and see what happens! Our hypothesis is that the felt with start to melt, and the colors will pop! Yesterday we started with blue, today we added green, and tomorrow is pink and red. Stay tuned for the progress of our project!
