We take care of our things

One of the most important parts of school for young children is learning to be responsible for yourself and your things. Most young children have a strong innate desire to help out. And given the opportunity to contribute to the smooth running of the classroom in real ways, they enthusiastically pitch in. This summer we are spending our mornings outdoors, so snack is served as a picnic at one of the small round tables next to the playground. And the children know that "at school, we take care of our things." After they are finished eating they are responsible for clearing their own spaces. Mia and Sandy knew just what to do, gathering their trash in their arms and heading towards the trash can. Taking responsibilty for such chores helps build confidence and often leads to children's interest in taking on other responsibilities or growing their skills in new ways.
