In the Levana class, we have been learning all about the upcoming Jewish holiday of Tu B'shevat, the birthday of the trees. To honor the holiday, we are in the process of making our own classroom tree! We stacked and glued styrofoam boxes, and we are painting with glue and sticking brown paper on the sides to make tree bark. We are going to continue to work on our tree, exploring the tree's different parts and learning how it grows. We have also been singing songs about trees and pretending that we are trees, ourselves!
During this process of creating our own tree, we are also getting to use our bodies in different ways. To paint the glue on the bottom of the tree, the students have to either sit on the floor, kneel or crouch. To put the paper on the top of the tree, we have to stand on tiptoe and reach up to the top. We are practicing our hand grips on the paintbrushes, and learning how to wipe the sides of the brushes so the glue doesn't drip on the floor!
When we started the project early this week, there was mostly white box showing, with very little brown paper, but by Thursday, our box is completely covered with bark. Next step, leaves!
And after all of that gluing, our hands got pretty sticky.
So the tree team grabbed a wipe and cleaned their hands together!
