Helping children learn how to take turns by creating activities where taking is an essential part of the play theme is key. Alex took a few cardboard blocks off the shelf and started to put one on top of the other. I joined in on the play and took the opportunity to model taking turns through my language and actions. Hannah joined us and we all took turns building a tower of blocks. As we took turns , I chanted "My Turn, Your Turn". Alex liked knocking down the tower after it was built, but Hannah decided she did not like that part of the game at all! So Hannah found her own space and built her own tower. Alex continued to play the "build and crash" game with me.
As children begin to play with others at school, they need to learn the skills of taking turns. However it is that we want the children to behave, parents and teachers need to make sure we model that behavior in our interactions with them. Look for opportunities to teach the language of taking turns as you play with your children.
