After experimenting with the rainbow rice a the sensory table, it was clean up time. Lindsey led the way, with Harold, Ellen, and Sydney following close behind as the team found the lid to the sensory table on the other side of the room. As it is quite large, it took all of them, working together, to lift it. What a beautiful sight to see them working as a kehillah, a community, to do some of the more difficult chores in the classroom. Maria Montessori, namesake of today's Montessori schools and an innovative thinker in early childhood education in 19th century Italy, believed that children build who they become as adults by using their hands, heart, and will. In the case of classroom chores, by doing the chore, by wanting to do the chore, and by wanting to do it well, children grow in their own personal understanding of what it means to be part of a community. As our TBSCC kehillah grows, so does each child's skill and feeling of belonging.
