The Keshet children have enjoyed this colorful, humorous book that tells of a family's Shabbat customs; they've been able to bring the characters to life using stick puppets. Today we decided to make Bubbe's kugel and try it for our Shabbat snack. We were able to find the recipe on the website of the author, Jacqueline Jules. We gathered our ingredients and went to work. When cooking, the children demonstrate many of the skills they have learned; turn-taking is now the comfortable norm, and those waiting for a turn offer to help by holding the bowl, cup or pan. The conversation includes comments about the ingredients (I love noodles!), stories from home ( my Daddy loves kugel), and questions (What's pineapple? I think it looks like corn.) The children love to count as they add the eggs, and count the number of times they stir and mix. The result was a labor of love in a heart-shaped pan!
