The Sneetches
We like to end our days in the Haifa class with a book. Today we read The Sneetches by Dr. Seuss. We are using this book to bridge the gap between rhyming and the story of Chanukah. The Sneetches is a story about star-bellied sneetches and plain-bellied sneetches, and how the star-bellied sneetches thought they were better because they had stars. It is a kids story about discrimination, and the sneetches eventually get so confused they can't tell the difference between the star-bellied and the plain-bellied sneetches. The Haifa kids were able to tell us that this was unfair because no one is better than someone else because of skin color or appearance. We are going to use this story as a launch pad to start talking about the story of Chanukah and who the Maccabees were! We feel very greatful to have such thoughtful kids.
