Tzedakah ~ Chanukah
As we prepare for Chanukah blessings, we also acknowledge our responsibility to take care of those people who are less fortunate than us. Latkes, Latkes, Good to Eat, by Naomi Howland is a Russian Tale of generosity and greed that takes place on the first night of Chanukah. One is introduced to a poor family of one girl and four brothers. They are cold and hungry. On the very first night of Chanukah, Sadie goes out to gather wood for the fire so that the family can get warm. Along the way she meets an old lady with wrinkled skin and torn clothes. Sadie performs an act of generosity giving away the firewood to this women who is poorer than she. In exchange the women gives Sadie a magical pan and tells Sadie that she and her family will not be hungry as they recite the words "Latkes, Latkes, Good to eat, cook me up a Chanukah treat!!! The old lady warns her to follow instructions. We asked the children what they could do to help someone who is COLD and has NO MONEY? Though there are a couple of messages in the book, we as a class concentrated on the act of kindness. Boys and girls said ~ give them Chanukah treats, coat, candles to keep them warm, gloves, covers, and a heating pad." We decided to bring in some felt and make a blanket to give away. This proved a difficult task, tying the strips together but Teddy Fox, Sam, Teddy Friedman, Matty, and Oliver worked very hard. Thank you for your efforts. As we prepare for this season of Chanukah may we be mindful of our many blessings and our responsibility to help those in need.
