playground play and new friends

One of the many benefits of our TBSCC playground is that we get a chance to play with children in other classes.  When the Shamayim children are outside, we are joined by the Etzim class and the Levana class.  It is so fun to see new friendships form and witness interactions between children who do not know each other very well.

Today, Olivia (Levana) and Jacob (Etzim) were baking and serving ice cream in their "shop" underneath the fire pole.  Max (Shamayim) came over and Olivia asked him if he'd like peach ice cream.  Max said he would and the two shared a lovely treat together.  Max said he was finished after fiddling with the wood chip "dessert" and was on his way.

We hope Olivia, Max and Jacob find each other again on the playground.  It was wonderful to see all of the children laughing, smiling, and exploring today.

The Chester Report!

We had a very busy morning on Monday!  With the delayed opening we did not have time to read the Chester Report in the morning program.   Noah was so excited to read Chester's Journal with his friends we decided to read Chester's Journal in Lunch Bunch.
Noah took Chester out and held his hand with Zach and Elias.  They were all ready to listen to Noah and Chester's story.

It's always so special for all the children when Chester comes out to play.  Often in Lunch Bunch the children have the opportunity to visit and play with Chester.  Elias noticed Chester had a "boo, boo" on his tail.  Elias asked me if we could put a bandage on Chester's tail.   Noah and Elias carefully put the bandage on Chester's tail.
Josh is the leader of the week and will get to bring Chester home with him for the entire February vacation!  Maybe at some point over vacation Josh and a member of his family can fix Chester's "boo, boo" with a needle and thread.   I don't know who is more excited for Chester's visit, Josh or Jen (Josh's mom)!

Just as we were finishing up with Noah's detailed report of his adventures with Chester  his Aunt and Uncle arrived,  as it was dismissal time!   What a nice surprise...  Noah was so happy to see them!  He showed them around the classroom , they met Noah's friends and checked out Noah's Journal.

Chester's social life is very, very  BUSY!   That guy really gets around!

Hot Chocolate with Haifa

Thank you to the Haifa classroom for inviting Etzim in for a delicious and fun hot chocolate/popcorn snack and play time.  We loved hanging out with the big kids and your teachers, and playing on your loft.   What friendly neighbors!

Budding Friendships

In a moment, a hand is extended and is grasped by another classmate's hand.  Joyful smiles wash over the faces of kids as they connect in friendly play.  Sliding alone is great, but it's a special feeling to hold hands with your friend as you slide down FAST as a team.   This is another way in which the Keshet children are moving from parallel play to dyad play - in pairs.

Cooperative Play!

Cooperative play begins with simple back-and-fourth play of two children. They attempt to coordinate their actions so they can roll a ball back and fourth or take turns talking on the telephone. In these early interchanges, children practice the turn-taking pattern of "first me, then you." In their preschool years, children develop their interactional skills further, and some group play begins to form. They learn to play together, deciding what to play and what roles to take. In cooperative play, all the children involved take part in the same activity.

On Wednesday, Samantha, Molly, Lily and Charlotte pretended to play school on the playground. They modeled how cooperative play looks and sounds. Their conversation sounded like this: Charlotte: Who is the stick person this week?
Molly: Let's pick a stick.(Molly used a leaf instead of a stick)
Samantha: Who is it?
Molly: It's Lily..It's your turn to take Chester home!
Then the children sang our morning welcome song, but instead of passing the Torah they passed a truck. Their play sounded and looked just like our morning circle. It is so nice to see new friendships budding as the children engage in cooperative play!

Rock Art!

After some discussion at our second circle this morning Adam raised his hand and asked, "Can I paint a rock for my sister Mia?" I said, "Of course, in Lunch Bunch we can gather some rocks and paint them outside." Adam lit right up with the thought of "filling Mia's bucket", by painting her a rock! Adam inspired us all to paint and design rocks. The children painted big and small rocks. There were pink and orange rocks, green and blue, spotted and rainbow rocks too. If you get a chance come onto the playground tomorrow morning and check out the ROCK ART!

Chester our friend!

Chester has made his way into our hearts!   We all have become quite fond of Chester!  The children that have had the opportunity to take Chester home and spend time with him actually miss him, when they bring him back to school.   Everyday Lily says, "I want Chester to come to my house again."   Last week Joise took Chester home for the weekend.  On Tuesday she was so delighted to share Chester's journal with her classmates and teachers.

The children who have not had a turn with Chester can't wait to take Chester home to visit with their family.   Everyday this week Zack has asked if Chester can come out to visit.  When Chester comes out to play he has a really nice way of bringing the children together.  Chester is what we call a very" friendly" guy, as he always invites everyone into his circle of play.  Chester is a wonderful addition to our class and we are glad to have him.

How to be a "Bucket Filler"

Carol McCloud is the author of Have You Filled a Bucket Today?  "She first learned about bucketfilling in a parenting workshop at an early childhood conference in the1990's.  The speaker, an expert in infant brain research, said it is helpful to think of every baby as being born with an invisible bucket.  The bucket represents a child's mental and emotional health.  You can't see the bucket, but it's there.  She went on to say that it is primarily the parents' or other caregivers' responsibility to fill a child's bucket.  When you hold, caress, nurture, touch, sing, play and provide loving attention, safely and care, you fill your child's bucket."

Carol goes on to say, "However, in addition to being loved, children must also be taught how to love.  Children who learn how to express kindness and love lead happier lives.  When you love and care about others and show that love with what you say and do, you feel good and you fill your own bucket, too."

Carol says she wrote Have You Filled a Bucket Today? to teach young children how to be bucket fillers. Each time we read the book with the children, we use it as an opportunity to model bucketfilling by filling their buckets.  We help them think about what they might say it do to fill someones else's bucket.  We will continue to work with the children and help them practice daily bucketfilling.

As you can see in the above photos they are already ready experiencing the pride and joy of filling buckets.  Josh reached out to Noah on the way to down to the Community Room and said,  "Let's hold hands."  Noah smiled, reached out his hand and said, "Yes, let's hold hand."    Zach saw that Lily was having trouble getting her magnatile structure to stay up, so he offered to help.   Daily Micah G thinks of his mom and takes the time to write her special notes.   Last week Josie was having trouble stirring the pumpkin muffins...the dough was thick and hard to mix.   Elias heard Josie ask for help and started stirring the dough for her.  We sure are have fun filling buckets!

This book is a must have for you library at home!  The whole family will love filling buckets!

Eating lunch together...

The lunch part of Lunch Bunch was full of smiles and great conversation! After lunch the children are responsible to put their garbage where it belongs, their lunch box back into their backpacks and then they have the opportunity to brush their teeth. Today we all sat around and brushed our teeth together, as we sang... The Brushing Your Teeth Song (Raffi).

Our First Shabbat Together!

First we spent some time outside playing on the playground. Josie and Zach enjoyed spending time in the kitchen area, making goldfish cakes. Molly and Charlotte decided to play house and care for Molly's baby. They put the baby on the swing, fed her and changed her diaper multiple times. It is so nice to see the children playing and connecting with both their new classmates and their old friends.

At circle time we read Sammy Spider's First Rosh Hashanah, sang our welcome song, picked our first STICK PERSON for next week (very exciting stuff Adam will be our leader for the week), and talked about our hopes for the Jewish New Year. During free play we braided our own challah and had the opportunity to make New Year cards.
We ended the day by gathering together for delicious group Shabbat snack...We said the blessings, sang songs, ate challah and apple cake! It was a wonderful ending to a fantastic and fun first week!
Sasha and I wish you all a Happy and Healthy New Year!

Home-To-School-Connection!

Displaying images from children's home and family life in the early childhood environment creates a continuous reminder of the home-to-school connection. These photos can be displayed in a variety of ways, such as plastic frames, photo stands, notebook binders, bulletin boards. Some of these images should be portable so that children are free to move around and incorporate them into their play or turn to them when they need comfort or reassurance.

As the children transition from home into their new classroom, they will be given the opportunity to visit their family posters, pictures, portable frames and books so they can feel a connection. These images displayed throughout the classroom serve as a springboard for storytelling, language development, and exploration of likeness and difference.

At dismissal Lily, Noah and Samantha enjoyed looking through and saying the names of their friends/classmates in the TBSCC Photo Book! Lily is new to our school and is learning the names of the children in the Tel Aviv classroom for the first time. Samantha and Noah were pleased to help Lily remember her classmates names.

Molly Reads to Us

Today Molly read a book to the group.  She made up her own story and held the attention of everyone with her reading.   It has been a lot of fun watching our playground friendships expand as we have different groups of children together for camp!

The Shabbat Helper Is...

Today was Josh's turn to be the Shabbat Helper. He exclaimed, "My dad is working from home today so he dropped me off." What a special treat on your Shabbat Helper day! He easily recited all the blessings over the candles, juice, and Challah. Rose really wanted to help Josh with these tasks and sat next to him hoping to provide some assistance. Josh very nicely told her, "I can do it myself, I don't need any help." Although Rose was very sad at that moment, later on in the morning Josh offered to help her when she wanted some assistance building a house with the magnetiles. "I'll help you Rose," he exclaimed excitedly. Rose smiled and together the two of them proceeded to work together to build the house. Thank you Josh! That was friendly!

"We Wish You Well"

Rachel had tubes put in her ears yesterday and was not in school. Some of the Tel Aviv children took it upon themselves to write "We Wish You Well Cards". They made Rachel a card and put them in her classroom mailbox! She was so surprised and just delighted to receive her cards this morning!

Friendly behavior

As relationships continue to evolve within our classroom, it is important to point out and support friendly behavior between children. Holding hands, a friendly pat or hug are all important ways to show someone that we care and that they are important to us.

Including children in games already in progress is another way that children can show friendly behavior. Today, Lizzie and Aleeza were playing "house". Noah Sirlin came over and said that he wanted to join their game. Aleeza bent down and kindly asked Noah who he'd like to be. After some discussion between Aleeza, Noah and myself, Noah decided that he was going to be "the dad". Aleeza said "Ok! Let's go." She took Noah's hand and helped him enter their game. All three children did a great job negotiating and showing friendly behavior!

Being a friend

Today, Jaedyn wasn't feeling so great. She was sad and wanted her mommy. After some cuddles, we suggested that she make a picture for her mommy. She asked Judi to draw her mommy and daddy. After the portraits were done, she wanted to add some stickers. Jaedyn took the stickers to the "kitchen" table and, shortly thereafter, Aleeza joined her. She asked Jaedyn if she could help her and the two girls added stickers together. Aleeza definitely wanted to help Jaedyn feel better. This act of kindness and display of being a friend is something that we try to highlight during our day. Kudos to Aleeza and all of the sunshines for working hard to use friendly and compassionate behavior at school!

Today I feel...

When children become aware of how their words and behaviors affect others, they can begin to evaluate what kinds of behavior will work to make friends. When they grab a toy away, they can look at their friends face and discover that grabbing is not a good strategy to maintain a friendship. When they help a friend find their missing shoe, they can see the smile on their friend's face and discover that helping is a good friendship skill. Today we read Today I Feel Silly & Other Moods That Make My Day ,by Jamie Lee Curtis. After we read the book we all had the opportunity to create bagel faces that express a certain mood(silly, mad, crazy, happy). Fun activities like this, help children develop this awareness of how we communicate our feelings/moods with facial expressions/body language.

Congratulating our Friends

The Haifa class always tries to show friendship and kindness towards one another. Right before Thanksgiving, Ebert, our daytime cleaner/janitor/everything-you-could-ever-need-fixed genie, welcomed his third baby girl into his family! The Haifa class decided to make him a card, or a poster as the case may be, and put it on the door of his office. We have since learned that her name is Camila!
Congratulations Ebert!
