We celebrated Shabbat today with our Shabbat candles, challah and wine goblets in the kitchen area. Gabriel was working hard putting the candles into the wooden candle holders. With enthusiasm, he began singing Happy Birthday to You to one of our babies and then blew the candles out.
Making connections between experiences we have and new things we find is one way children learn and examine the world around them.
During circle we talked about how birthday candles and Shabbat candles are different: we light Shabbat candles every Friday night(whether it is someone's birthday or not) and we do not blow them out...and...we don't usually get birthday presents on Shabbat!!
It's amazing how such a common item can be such a conversation started and lead in to rich conversations.
