The children were very curious about the "orange goop", otherwise known as the pulp of the orange. Most of the children said they don't like the pulp.
After we cleaned up, we all gathered around to taste the" fruits of our labor" the orange juice of course! At the end of the day this is what the critics had to say:
- Hadley- "I love it!"
- Avery- "I am drinking the pulp, I love it!"
- Sam R- "There is no sugar in this!"
- Jesse-"This is sour!"
- Sam P- "Can you take the seeds out of my cup?"
- Daniel-"I don't like it...Can I have some water?"
- Josh R- "If there was more, I would like some"!
- Sandy-"I like it."
- Teddy F-"Yummy!"
- Teddy P-"I like it!"
- Ruby- "Can I have some more?"
- Teddy F-" It tastes sour!"
The element I enjoy most about this cooking unit is the chance for the children to experience everyday food in a new way. I'll bet it was the first time many had made oj. They probably assume it grows in liquid form. To not only see it transform from orange to juice but to actually create the juice is such a powerful lesson in science, nutrition, collaboration. Can't wait to hear more.
ReplyDeleteYes. . .I have been getting lots of questions about how things are made and how they grow. This was a great lesson. . .and the best part. . .tasting the juice they made themselves.
