Literacy Skills

Many people assume children learn to read in kindergarten or first grade. Research tells us that learning to read starts in the first months of life, as children learn about language from the sounds around them.

At school, we are teaching pre-reading skills every day, even to your three year old. How?

  • By making reading enjoyable with stories on laps and in small groups
  • Encouraging your child to "read" books independently
  • Showing children the parts of the book- cover, words, title
  • Teaching children how to handle and respect books
  • Asking children about characters and objects in books
  • Choosing books with interesting language features such as rhythm, rhyme, and sounds (poetry, songs, nursery rhymes)
  • Providing books with predictable patterns so children can experience "reading" by chanting along
By age three, we expect most children to:
  • Like reading with an adult and ask adults to read to them
  • Listen to stories and books
  • Recognize favorite books by the cover
  • Handle books respectfully
  • Name objects in books
