Oh no! A fire on the playground! Jeffrey, Daniel, Noah, and Matthew rushed to put it out. When they heard there were animals inside, both a pet dog and a pet fish, they moved to action, battling the flames with their hoses (aka shovels). They worked together on the inside of the house, then moved on to the roof.
"Help! Over here!" said Daniel. "Coming, Daniel!" replied Noah and together they started to tackle the back.
Watching this game, I was struck by how absorbed the children were in their imaginary scenario. They worked together, negotiating and problem solving, assigning roles and changing strategies as the game went along.
