Today we began a unit on famous artists. We started learning about color. With Julia Weiss' help, the children mixed water colors
to make other colors. Did you know that red and blue make purple? The children were excited about mixing and watching the colors change. Josh said this is science. Jesse said this is art. Jay said this is both and my mother and grandmother mix colors to make different colors. We hope to have a visit from a real watercolor artists: Jay's grandmother may be able to show us some of her paintings. We discussed at circle what an artist is and does. Some artists paint, some use clay, some mix colors as we did today and others paint wood and houses. Some artists make designs. Stay tuned later this week for Michelangelo, Degas and Matisse. If the children continue to show interest in this unit, we will continue it next week with Monet, Pollock, Chagall and Cassatt. A trip to the MFA anyone?
What a treat to have a visit from Jay's grandmother. I hope it works out for her to come. Aaron's grandmother told me about a snow painting idea- maybe if it snows enough this week you can try mixing colors with the snow as your canvas.
