Our Take on Jelly Doughnuts

Traditionally, Jews celebrate the holiday of Chanukah by eating foods fried in oil to commemorate the miracle of the oil in the ancient temple that lasted for eight days rather than one.  Therefore, sweet jelly doughnuts, called "sufganiyot" in Hebrew, are a popular holiday favorite!

We decided to make our own interpretation (and a slightly healthier version) in the Levana class.  We cut bread into shapes using cookie cutters (traditional doughnut circles and dreidel shapes, too) and then we spread jelly onto the bread, making ourselves a delicious, sticky snack!  The children enjoyed using the plastic knives to scoop out the jelly, spread it on the bread, and make the mini-sandwiches that resembled doughnuts.

Cutting bread shapes and spreading jelly was fun -- but the best part was definitely tasting the delicious snack!
Hayley tries the snack as Ellen works hard scooping jelly with a knife.

With a spot of jelly on her face, Ellen shows how proud she is that she can make her own sandwich!

Samantha samples her jelly sandwich, as she watches Harold carefully spread jelly onto the bread.
