As is our tradition in the Kohavim class, we asked the children for their input in deciding what to do with those potatoes we have been observing. They used their emerging literacy skills to write their thoughts: We will be honoring their ideas and chart their ideas so stay tuned for some further exploration of potatoes.
KT OPN = Cut open
PNT= Paint
Plant, PLT= Plaint
GRO= Grow
CIT THM OPEN= Cut them open.
SML = Smell
Providing children with the opportunity to write their ideas on paper from topics that are of interest to them furthers their love of learning and makes it all the more meaningful and purposeful. They are using their phonetic awareness , applying sounds to letters. Typically children hear the first and last sounds and write accordingly, and move towards more conventional spelling. Eventually they will be written correctly but it is important to provide them with time with these meaningful opportunities to write based on their experiences in their environment that are of interest to them.
