Children cooking on their own!

Independent cooking is one of the best uses of the classroom cooking area! Just as children benefit from reading a book by themselves, doing a puzzle on their own, or painting independently, they thrive when engaging in a cooking activity on their own.

Children love to make fruit salad, which is a great independent cooking activity! The All Star Lunch Bunch group enjoyed dicing and slicing up grapes, oranges, bananas, and strawberries to make a delicious fruit salad! While the children worked on preparing the fruit salad the teachers took the opportunity to ask ask the children some questions:

  • How are these fruits alike and different?
  • Which fruit is the most juicy?
  • Which fruit is the easiest to cut? Why?
  • Which fruit is the most difficult to cut?
  • Which fruit has the strongest smell?
  • Which fruit is the most tasty?
  • Which fruits have seeds?

The children are looking forward to next weeks cooking activities which include: raisin cookies, apple muffins, trail mix, and orange juice.
