Haifa kids were spread all over the classroom, under the loft, at the table, in corners, and on the rug. Why? For reading time! Independent reading is a daily activity. In the Needham public school curriculum for kindergarten, a learning expectation for kindergarten is that children will explore books during reading time. By the end of the kindergarten year, they are expected to be able to identify the parts of the book including the title, author, beginning, and end and to understand books are a source of information. This skill is developed through many different opportunities to explore books.
