It's WAR

It is a great day in the Haifa class everyday but especially when 4 boys spent up to one hour playing WAR!! This was anything but a battle.
It was totally amicable - a real show of friendship. These children played WAR during the entire free choice period. They negotiated the rules, some the same as the traditional rules that we know, and some slightly different. They used their math skills to figure out that a five wins over a 4 and that a Queen is worth 10 but wins over a Jack. Ace beats everything. They knew that when at least two of the children turned over the same number that there was a WAR. Three cards were put face down and the fourth one turned face up.
Yes!! There was a winner. The only help these children needed was from an adult to shuffle the cards. All this fun and math lessons learned from a $1.00 deck of cards.

  1. I remember playing this card game with my girls and in elementary school myself. This game has been around a looooong time. We loved to call "war". Great fun way to teach math skills. I also remember when I was an aide in an elementary school and helping children learn their multiplication tables with these huge playing cards. Lots of fun memories.
