Old Fashioned Apple Peeler = peel, core, slice!

This cooking activity provides excellent opportunities for children to find out more about apples! Maria was kind enough to bring in her old fashioned hand peeler to remove the skin and core as well as slice the apples. Most of the children had never used an old fashioned hand peeler before...They were all fascinated, and very eager to have a turn! Tomorrow we will finish mixing and measuring the ingredients together to make a delicious apple cake!

In case you were wondering...
The work of peeling, coring, and slicing the apple is made easier by the use of the apple peeler. Physical changes occur in the apple as the skin and core are removed. The apples change from whole to parts when sliced. Additional changes take place with the application of heat to cook the apples. The process of cooking breaks down the apple fibers, which becomes softer and change color.
