Our Perceptive Five Year Olds...

On Friday Judi read Matthew and Tilly by Rebecca C. Jones to our Scientists. The book is about two best friends, Matthew and Tilly. Matthew and Tilly do everything together, and occasionally get sick of one another. The short summary is that best friends are always there for each other, you can ask your children about the end, I don't want to give it away!

In the middle of the book, Judi stopped before she read a line, and told the students she was about to read words that we never use at school ("stupid" and "mean," Matthew and Tilly were fighting).

After we talked about why we don't use these words in school, one of our students asked us why grown ups can use words like stupid and mean. The Scientists made note that not all adults use these words, and they think that those adults learn not to use them because they are not nice.

Judi and I found this conversation amazing. We never realize how much children listen and model behavior after others until conversations like this!
Food for thought...
