Press Here

The children are always drawn to a new book, but this book attracted a crowd almost instantly. If you haven't read Press Here by Herve Tullet, head to the library and check it out. It begins simply enough with an instruction to press a big yellow dot. Turn the page and that yellow dot magically turns into two yellow dots! Expressions of delight and wonder filled the children's faces. Next we rubbed the dots and turned the page. Wow! They magically turned red! Then blue!

Shaking the dots made them scatter across the page. Tilting the book made them roll to one side. We clapped our hands and the dots grew bigger and bigger.  "Again, again!" they cried, wanting to read this book over and over and over, pressing, shaking, rubbing, and tilting the dots to create all kinds of magical changes. I love the moments with young children where I get to watch true wonder. Although they seemed to realize the dots weren't actually changing, but that we were just turning the pages, they let themselves get lost in an imaginative space and pretend along.  Thank you for giving me the opportunity, Unicorn kids.

  1. It was actually not the Rainbow kids with whom Ellen read this story, but it looks like a wonderful story and the kids seemed so engaged!

  2. That's so interesting! How awe-filled the kids were, even though they knew that they were just turning the page. This reminds me of something in Mind in the Making that talks about what level of "magic" we let ourselves believe in, even if we logically know it can't be true. This seems like the kids are allowing themselves to believe that they are changing the dots, even though they know that they aren't. Does that make any sense?
