Bucket Filler or Bucket Dipper?

During our meeting time we read one of our favorite books, Have you Filled a Bucket Today? While we read the book the children had the opportunity to share how they have been filling buckets over the course of the week, both at home and at school. The children clearly like to listen to this book. Every time I read it they are wearing their best listening looks! We all know what a listening look is right?

As soon a lunch ended a most of the children gathered on the rug to build with the magnitiles. They split up into three groups. For the most part they shared the magnitiles quite well . But as their structures became more detailed and elaborate they ran out of magnitiles. Then we had a few problems to solve! Some asked a friend if they could have one or two of their magnitile, and others just helped themselves (without asking).

When a child took one of Dylan's magnitiles he said, "You are dipping in my bucket!" She then gave the magnitiles back. I asked the children if they would like me to ask another classroom if we could borrow their magnitiles for a while? What do you think they said? The Sunshine teachers were more than happy to share their magnitiles with us. Dylan was the first to take a few. Before he started to build Dylan happily gave a bunch of magnitles to Avery and Sadie. Zack observed this and said, "Hey Dylan is filling their bucket!" I said, "You are right what a nice thing to do!" The more we use and practice the terms in the book (bucket dipper, bucket filler), the more opportunities the children will have to internalize these concepts.
