A Different Language

Our Unicorn friends are very interested in languages. To encourage this interest we provide books written in Hebrew, Spanish, and Sign Language. In addition we speak Hebrew, Spanish, and use sign language in morning meeting greetings. Sign Language is "different" from other languages in that we do not use our voices to communicate our thoughts. We use our "hands." We have a book of sign language signs for children to look at during quiet reading time. (Quiet reading can be anytime, but we also use it for transitions wherein friends select a book during various transitions in the classroom.) Here Jake and Zack are trying out their sign language. They asked about the sign for boy, girl, owl, and bird, and the ABC's. Here they are "practicing" communicating with their hands.

  1. We have a congregant who interprets for the deaf. She just taught us some signs at the Sisterhood Retreat this past weekend. I know she has worked with some preschool classrooms as well. Let me know if you want me to put you in touch with her!

  2. That would be great!! Please let us know how to reach her, so she can come teach us some more American Sign Language. I think the children would benefit.

    Thanks
