Is It a Big Problem or a Little Problem?

Last week I attended a workshop called “Is It a Big Problem or a Little Problem?” The workshop was part of the Gateways in Jewish Education Early Learning Series. The presenters were two professionals from The Ivymount School in Maryland. In discussing gross motor skill development in preschoolers the presenters made the point that gross motor activity first thing in the school schedule is desirable. Ms. Freedman and Greenberg went on to say that “children need physical exercise and outdoor play time." Some children will benefit from this before going to school. Having a chance for some physical outlet can help some youngsters be ready to play. As you can see from this picture taken a few weeks ago, the children are busy. We have seen that physical activity first thing is good early in the schedule is true in our class. Even though we are outside at the coldest time of the morning, the children come in to the class ready to settle down, attend at circle and get on to the important business of play.

  1. I think going outside first thing is a great idea- Matt, does not always love the idea he sometimes thinks it is too cold.
