Drawing from a model

Real tools were laid out on the table, and step by step instructions for three animals were displayed.  How do you draw a cat?  First, draw a circle for the head.  "How big should it be?" asked Alex.  That part was up to the artists. Then a body.  "Which way should it go?" asked Naomi.  Again, an artist decision.  Jonathan drew his cat body horizontally and Alex drew it vertically.  With determination and focus, the children continued through all six steps in the model, then continued adding details.  We ended up with a pregnant cat (14 kittens!) by Becca and  a family of cats by Alison.
