Do you ever hear yourself in your children???

As I was sitting at a snack table sharing conversation and snack with Unicorn friends, I was listening and heard the following exchange.

Do you think Haman is BAD? asked a friend, with a note of sarcasm.
Another friend, in lieu of answering the question responded: "Well, what do you think?"

As teachers, we often, respond the same way to the questions your children ask. Often, they know they answer, or have a idea worth exploring, and just need a little time to reflect.

  1. The answer to your title question is "often". I am often surprised when my own voice comes back to me. And it doesn't stop as they grow older, in fact it only becomes more and more sophisticated in the response...

  2. I am sometimes terrified by how often I hear myself in my kids (more and more Adam too). Often it is good and sometimes I think, uh oh- I passed that on too? But it's quite wonderful to hear the vocabulary passed on and luckily some manners as well. Just assume that if anything inappropriate comes out of Mia's mouth, it didn't come from her mother! Tonight in the bath she said, "Good heavens!" which I have never said and have never heard Todd say either. They pick stuff up everywhere! It's a riot!

  3. Yesterday Rachel told me that I say, "Son of a Gun" and "darnit" all of the time and those are bad things to say. I didn't realize how often I said them (although they are oh so much better than the alternatives.)
