Homemade Applesauce

This cooking activity provides excellent opportunities for children to find out more about apples. They washed them and used real butter knives to dice and slice the apples. Then they placed the small pieces in a large bowl, added a bit of cinnamon, water and sugar. Then the children poured all the ingredients into a hot plate and we cooked the applesauce in our classroom.

Physical changes occurred in the apples, from whole to parts when sliced. Additional changes took place with the application of heat to cook the apples. The process of cooking breaks down the apple fibers, which become softer and change color.

The best part of the whole activity was the work of slicing the apples with REAL knives! To be honest the children only needed some minor assistance when cutting the apples, for the most part this step was accomplished independently (with teacher supervision at all times). On Monday we will continue to explore with apples and graph the results of our taste test!
