How many apples long are you?

The question of the day in the Tel Aviv classroom...How many apples long are you? We invited the children to pair up with a partner and guess/count out how many apples long they are. We were guessing and counting all morning long! I don't know who had more fun the teachers or the children! The children measured each other , the teachers , and they were even looking for Ellen, because they wanted to measure her too! Each child had their own idea as to where to place the apples. Some children started placing the apples at the head and worked their way down and others started at the feet and worked their way up. Some children counted quickly as they pointed and skipped apples along the way and others counted slowly and counted each and every apple. Their findings were very interesting. For example, Ezra was 15 apples long when he laid down on his back and when he turned over onto his belly, he was 13 apples long. Hannah was 13 apples long and Rachel was 16 apples long!

As your child's teachers one of our many goals is to develop a mind set that they can be problem solvers. We recognize that there are many possible methods for solving a problem and that children need the freedom to select their own thinking strategies even if their solutions turn out to be incorrect.

  1. I love that you are using this project to develop a mindset of problem solving and persistence. I wouldn't have thought about all the opportunities it provides for that practice. Thanks for pointing that out.

  2. Hannah LOVED doing this activity yesterday! When she told me that she was 20 apples tall (I guess she grew a bit on the ride home), I couldn't imagine what she was talking about...thanks for the pics!! Dylan looks like he was a great helper for many!
