A Civics Lesson
Has your child asked about all of the people holding signs for various candidates on the street corners around town? Today we discussed elections and voting and how very important it is to exercise our right to vote. In fact, the girls were rather upset to learn that, many years ago, women were not allowed to vote!
A few of our friends had already gone with their parents to vote early this morning and knew first hand about voting and secret ballots. Now, all of the Scientists have experienced "voting," as we held our own "election" in the Scientist class. We voted for which color we preferred - red or blue. Each child had an opportunity to vote with a secret ballot, and then we tallied up all of the votes, and determined a winner. Blue won! And we didn't have to worry about having a run-off election, because our election resulted in a landslide - Blue won 9-3. And because not everyone had voted for the winner, we were able to talk about the democratic process, and the concept of "majority rules."
Perhaps you'll be able to take your child with you when you vote. How exciting to experience the right to vote at such a young age!
