Oobeleck!

Art and Science recipes are to be used in the art and science areas of the classrooms. The recipes for goop, gak, and the like, have a strong science component. Today we experimented with sugar, flour, water, cream of tartar, and attempted to make Haste with Make- Your-Own paste. We followed the recipe but the end result was definitely not paste! We learned that some science experiments don't always turn out quite right.
So, we switched gears and measured the ingredients to make Oobleck! Oobleck comes from Dr Seuss's Bartholomew and the Oobleck and is an unstable substance- a liquid and solid at the same time!
Picking up oobleck will make it melt. Throw it in the air, and it will lose its shape and flatten like a pancake. Try making a tub full of oobleck (using the 2:1 ratio of corn starch to water), but dramatically increase children to jump in! Both the teachers and children really enjoyed making and playing with the Oobleck! Try it at home!
Oobleck
1 cup cornstarch
1/2 cup water

  1. Confession #1- I as an adult love oobleck! #2- The third graders at our school actually make oobleck when studying the states of matter in science!

  3. I love it- just this morning we were talking about "things" that are solids and aren't liquid jello, pudding, now I can add oobleck.
