Our first Shabbat together was wonderful. The children loved having the opportunity to make challah again. It was clear these children had lots of experience preparing challah for Shabbat. I asked the children, "Do you know how to braid the challah dough?" Lily responded first, "I know because I learned how to do it in the Unicorn class." Dylan and Max chimed in with, "Me too we did it in the Unicorn class a lot." Last years Unicorn children proudly showed last years Sunshine children how to braid the dough, with a little bit of coaching from the teachers.
Everyone had their own strategy when it came to braiding the dough. Lily rolled the dough in her hands, Max rolled his out on the table, Dylan rolled out three big pieces and Hannah rolled out small tiny pieces. When the children were done braiding their challah we all walked down to the kitchen and placed the challah in the oven. When the challah came out of the oven it looked delicious!
Eli was SO proud of his challah. Even though he made challah last year as a Sunshine, he never ate it but on Friday he was so proud and excited that he ate the whole thing on the ride home!
ReplyDeleteIt sure smelled like Shabbat in your classroom. Wonderful that you are building on experiences from last year. I'd be willing to bet some of their parents don't know how to make challah!
