Mosaics anyone?

Sometimes a particular activity is just the thing to capture the interest of the girls and boys alike. Today the children were interested in making patterns or simply decorating paper grids showing several different mosaic designs. The activity inspired a lot of creativity as the children were selective in how they decided to fill in the grids. One child made an elaborate design that could also be used as a game. Two other children enjoyed writing on the colored squares as part of their fun. We talked some about warm and cold colors, a topic generated by the children, who were pretending that the different colors represented such things as power and fire. Other children chose to make their own designs on black paper with no grid. This activity fostered a discussion of numbers, sorting, classification, and patterns.
