Touching the Buttons

Yesterday the Haifa class invited Sherry Grossman to come into our class and help us further our interest in music and musical instruments. Sherry works for Gateways, a Jewish organization that supports education in synagogues, and when we met with her, she mentioned her musical talent.

When she came in yesterday, we invited our friends in the Levana class to come as well. We were treated to a mini concert of a buffalo drum, a tenor saxaphone, and an oboe. Sherry played each instrument for the children, took them apart, and explained how the instruments made sounds. At the end of her jam session, the Haifas were able to touch the buttons on the saxaphone to see the difference between those buttons and those of a clarinet. They also took turns with the buffalo drum, one that was unknown to our class before.

Before Sherry left, she told us that she is part of a group that is working on Peter and the Wolf. During our musical study, Peter and the Wolf became one of the favorite pieces for the children to listen to. We were so excited to hear that they were working on it, and we are hoping that we will get to see or hear them perform!
