An Invitation to Experiment
The Unicorn students were recently presented with the following invitation: a large floor easel covered with fresh white paper, jars filled with green, blue, and red paint, and a selection of items from nature such as twigs, seed pods and stubby sticks. The all knew how to use an easel and paint. But where were the brushes? This presented them with a new challenge. Could they find something else to use as a painting tool? Some tried the sticks and pods. Others noticed pipe cleaners on a nearby table and thought those might make good painting tools. It's always interesting to watch what happens when children are presented with a situation that is mostly familiar and slightly novel.
