It only takes ONE
Nationwide it is NO NAME CALLING WEEK!!! We started our week with reading the book One by Kathryn Otoshi. We revisited this book this week to remind our boys and girls how important it is to Stand Up for themselves and injustices seen or heard. The author uses metaphor of colors to create a group of children with different personalities; blue being the one who is quiet, and Red who is hot and a bully. All the colors feel badly for blue but do not stand up to Red. Consequently Red becomes stronger and stronger. Then number "1" comes along and takes a stand and confronts Red. The other colors are inspired with the courage to do the same. We asked your children to think about what words would be hurtful. They responded "that's not a good drawing, I don't like you." They thought these words could be hurtful because they would make the other person 'sad' and that person would hate themselves'. Can one imagine some one's self confidence being so diminished by hurtful words? What could we say instead? YOU ARE AWESOME, some friends responded.
It is a powerful book about reminding us that it truly only takes ONE to make a difference in the world. It is our responsibility to do so!!! The other message is one of forgiveness, as Red is welcomed into the group as well. Providing the message of forgiveness allows us to see, though one makes mistakes, there is always opportunities for change.
