We learned from our occupational therapist consultant that it is critical for young children to spend time working on a vertical surface. As Drew and Abby add and remove buttons from the peg board that is mounted on the wall of the Unicorn classroom, they are strengthening the muscles in their wrists and forearms. Working at a table or on the floor uses different muscles, so this vertical work is a necessary part of getting ready for the sustained writing periods in early elementary school.
That's really interesting!!! Who would have thought about that?! We are so lucky to have so many resources for our teachers and parents!
