A Step by Step of our Volcano!

To end our long study on dinosaurs, the Haifa class took a look at volcanoes! One theory as to why the dinosaurs went extinct is that a volcano erupted, causing the food to die, and consequently, the dinosaurs. So what better way to study volcanoes than to make one ourselves!! Before Thanksgiving, we made the volcano out of paper mache, as Alana is demonstrating below.

The volcano was finally dry after our break, and we were able to explode the volcano outside in the gorgeous weather. After coloring the vinegar with red and orange watercolor, the Haifa class trooped downstairs to get front row seats to the explosion.

We even invited our Kohavim friends to join in the fun. We all watched from a safe distance to see what happens when baking soda and vinegar combine!! We got a great show and all escaped unharmed from flowing lava!

  2. Thank you Haifa boys and girls for sharing your experience with the Kohavim class. You have inspired us to make our own volcano!!!

  3. Some Kohavim boys and girls wanted to know if there is baking soda and vinegar in a REAL volcano? Nathaniel said No because those are 'chemicals' and there are no chemicals in volcanos. Others had a 'different' idea. So thank you again for inspiring us to find out what are the contributing factors that cause a volcano?

  4. I thought it was cool when I read about it last year and it hasn't diminished in its coolness. And it is clear from the faces of the children they thought this experiment was beyond cool! I am psyched that they will start to investigate more in the Kohavim class because Mia (as clear from the photo) is mesmerized by volcanoes.
