Using Writing for a Purpose

The Unicorn class restaurant has been in full swing. Orders are being placed, and your requested meal is delivered promptly and with a big smile. The teachers expertly brought this play to a new level by adding a written component. As adults, we write every day without realizing how important writing is to our lives. Young children don't make this connection on their own. We are deliberate in teaching them to see all the ways writing is used in our daily world. In this case, it was food orders, written with the child's name on top and their order listed below. Abby holds Max's order for chicken with pizza on it with a side of banana pie. How wonderful to see our children's imaginations flourish while learning to use written language for a purpose.

  1. And the math component too with the price of the food. The children must have felt so grown up with a real order with real writing! I know I have been excited to see that the Kohavim kids are doing a lot of writing for a purpose- it feels so valuable! And I am not surprised to see that it's happening in all of the classes!
