Dr. King

Why is he a doctor? Why is he a king? These are a few of the questions that the children asked when we told them next Monday is a holiday to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We learned in class that Dr. King fought to change the laws by using his words. The laws of where people could sit on the bus were wrong and, with words and peaceful boycotts, Dr. King and Rosa Parks changed the laws. The children were very interested in the story of the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the bravery that Rosa Parks showed by not giving up her seat on the bus. The children had difficulty understanding a world where people cannot just sit where they want. And yes, one of the teachers was around when the bus boycott happened. Guess which one?

Stay tuned for more about this subject this week. If the children become interested we may re-enact the play of the bus boycott.

  1. Thank you for using the name "Dr. King." I think that kids this age find a three-word name (plus Dr. and Jr.) too difficult to use. Eli told us at home many basic facts about Dr. King. He was able to learn, retain, and repeat them. Thanks!
