Last Thursday we had our first session of my new Thursday art time for Levana, Rainbow, and Unicorn students. Our first media was clay and we had a fantastic time! Max and Nathan were joined by Tel Aviv students Molly, Rachel and Jacob and together we played, poked and experimented with two different kinds of clay.
The first clay we played with was a brown sculpting clay. The group described this clay as sticky and mushy. Jacob made a worm out of the class because it reminded him of dirt. They enjoyed rolling it into balls and worms. Max pressed different shells in the clay to make fossils.
Next we took out some model magic molding clay. We had lots of white clay and some clay of different colors. We quickly learned that if you pinch and mush the clay long enough the colors blend together! It was neat to watch the colors mix together first with streaks and then eventually it would become one solid color. After playing with the color clay we brought out some markers and continued to experiment with color. This clay wasn’t as sticky and Max said it, “felt like a sponge.” Model magic was a much lighter clay than the molding clay we played with earlier. It was neat to watch the group compare and contrast the different types of clay. They loved using their hands to create neat, individual creations. Next week is Collage Creations and we hope to see you there!!
Adam is just starting to give up his naps but not yet consistently- maybe you can do something like this again in the later spring because I would love for Adam to experience it! It sounds fantastic. My favorite thing to do with model magic is to color it with marker and then blend it together until the model magic actually turns the color of the marker. So cool!
ReplyDeleteThank you Sasha! I can't wait to see how the art class develops.
ReplyDeleteRachel loved the clay. She wants me to buy her some for home.
