From Kernel to Corncob

The Unicorns are continuing their scientific studies this week. We are learning more about the process of growth by experimenting with corn. First we removed the kernels from Indian corn by hand. We spent some time studying the kernels. We weighed them, played with them and read great books about corn. After that the Unicorns planted the corn, in the soil of our class planter. We watered our new corn and will observe how they grow each day.

We are also planning to see if corn can grow in other environments. We will try to grow seeds in soil without water and in plastic bags with water, but no soil. Stay tuned for the results!

While we wait for harvest-time, we decided to enjoy some corn from the supermarket. Each Unicorn took an ear of corn and prepared them for our mid-morning snack. We peeled off the husks from each ear of corn, washed them and added them to a giant cooking pot. After the teachers boiled the corn in the kitchen, and the corn cooled down, we brought the corn back to the class where everyone enjoyed our special feast. More photos from a great week

  1. Love the photo of Rylan, Eli and Drew peering into that huge pot of corn. And I love how you used the corn in such a variety of ways. What a great way for the children to discover the properties by revisiting the same object again and again.
