On Friday, some of the Kohavim children found a slug on the playground. They noticed immediately that the slug was not moving. They thought about what this could mean and how they could determine if the slug was still living:
Molly It's not moving.
Rachel Oh no, it's dead.
Eliza: We have to take care of G-ds creatures and not step on it.
Eliza: Put it in a bag for its home.
Max: Let's pick it up and put it in water so it will live longer.
Eliza: We can make a shelter for it. It's kind of like a little house for animals to live in. We need some sticks.
Max: Oh a rock
Eliza: It can be the pillow
Max: But it might fall on it (the slug).
Eliza: We need sticks.
Molly: You stay here while we go get them (sticks).
The children were not sure whether the slug was not living or just not moving. They decided to construct a habitat and check back on the slug later. They carefully lifted the animal on a leaf and moved it to the table, where they used sticks to build a shelter. Finding an animal in nature, the children observed the slug, discussed their ideas, and developed an experiment to find out if the animal was still living. What an interesting, scientific investigation happening on the playground!
The suspense... so was it alive?
