As part of our study of creating nourishing classroom culture this summer, the teachers read the story of a student who came back to her teacher 20 years later and retold her strongest memory of her early years: dabs of flour on noses during baking projects. We thought about how these small moments, the ones that are never written into our lesson plans, are the ones that have the greatest impact on children. Since we can never predict what these memory making moments might be, our role as educators is to recognize opportunities for rituals and memory makers.
Challah making in the Unicorn class provided just such an opportunity. I heard laughter from the hallway and stepped inside to discover floury noses and plenty of giggles. What a simple moment of pure joy. Be sure to ask your child about it.
