Sukkah building

I was struck by the completely unique ways Sukkot is being celebrated in our classrooms. In every classroom at least one sukkah has been constructed, each in a very different way. Starting from the top left corner (click photo to enlarge), the Scientist class used a large cardboard box as the base of their sukkah and finished it with real schach (the greenery on top.) Inside this sukkah you can find little people and furniture ready for dramatic play.

The Unicorns have been banging away all week, nailing together all sorts of scrap wood to build their sukkah. Today they decided to furnish it with a table and chairs and I heard several suggestions regarding adding a front door.

In the Sunshine and Rainbow class the sukkah was ready and waiting when school started. This sukkah frame has already enjoyed a past life as Tina's child's chuppah and was recreated as a sukkah by last year's students. It now features real greenery cut from the teachers' yards and all manner of paper fruit made by the children.

Continuing on the bottom left, the Haifa sukkah is the first I've ever seen built off the ground. This high rise style sukkah was made from their classroom loft, then decorated with greenery and bead work.

In the Tel Aviv class, the children are constructing individual mini sukkahs, which will likely soon find a place at home with your collection of toy people or animals. Each has been topped with nature finds from the class nature walk earlier in the week.

Come on in and take a peek. You'll feel like you are walking the streets of Jerusalem, where there is a sukkah in every yard and balcony.
