The ability to gather and analyze data is a math skill that even young children are beginning to develop. Providing opportunities for your child to think, ask questions, and gather data in order to work through problems is simple. Look around the house for collections- a jar of coins, a bag of M&Ms, a box of tri-colored pasta, a sewing box, even the sugar packets in a restaurant. Each provides an opportunity to continue the data analysis process. Offer opportunities to sort and classify the objects in different ways.
Can sort them into piles by color?
Collect all the objects that have an edge.
Which pile is the biggest? Smallest?
Can you sort them in a new way?
